Md. 51 Bridge Near Paw Paw, WV

Potomac River Highway Bridge

blank dot

Near the Paw Paw tunnel on the C&O Canal, Maryland route 51 crosses the Potomac. The bridge is near the town of Paw Paw, West Virginia, here it connects with W.Va. Route 9.

Route 51 threads south from Cumberland through the industrial Potomac valley, following the historic alignment of Oldtown Road before reaching the river at the West Virginia line. The highway spans 25 miles and serves as a key connector between Cumberland and the rural communities near Paw Paw, where it meets WV Route 9 across the state line . One of its most distinctive features is the Md.?51 bridge over the C&O Canal--a single?span steel Warren Camelback pony truss built in 1932 during Maryland?s early "Good Roads" era,. Its low truss profile and compact engineering reflect the state?s push for durable, modern crossings in areas where longer spans were needed.
