USGS Gage at Fourmile Run VA

Monitoring Site

blank dot

The USGS river gage on Fourmile Run in Arlington, Virginia has been a cornerstone of stream monitoring since the early 1950s. Originally installed in 1952 at the Shirlington Road bridge, the gage began as a simple crest-stage station, recording only peak water levels during flood events. In 1998, it was upgraded to a continuous monitoring station, measuring stage, discharge, and rainfall at five-minute intervals, greatly improving flood forecasting and watershed management capabilities. For a brief period after the upgrade, the gage also recorded water temperature, though that function was later discontinued. Over the decades, the gage has documented numerous flood events in this highly urbanized watershed, providing critical data for stormwater management, infrastructure planning, and ecological restoration efforts. Its long record offers valuable insights into how urban development and climate variability have shaped the hydrology of Fourmile Run, making it an essential tool for both scientists and local agencies.Graph of USGS water data
