Sleepy Creek

Virginia Tributary

blank dot

This creek starts in Frederick County, Virginia, and flows through Morgan County to the Potomac at Sleepy Creek, Va. It has long been one of Morgan County's defining natural corridors, a stream whose history is tied to both early settlement and the rugged Appalachian landscape that surrounds it. Rising in the forested ridges of the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area, the creek flows south toward the Potomac through a watershed that has remained remarkably undeveloped, preserving the same quiet character that drew Indigenous peoples and later colonial farmers to its banks. Its cool, shaded waters support healthy populations of brook trout, darters, and mussels, while extensive wetlands and beaver activity create habitat for herons, wood ducks, and migrating songbirds. The surrounding oak-hickory forests and shale barrens host a mix of common and rare plant communities, giving the creek an ecological richness unusual for a region so close to the Washington-Baltimore corridor.
