CSX Railroad Bridge at North Branch MD
North Branch Potomac River Railroad Bridge

The bridge is part of the CSX Cumberland Subdivision, following the old B&O rail line. The B&O crossed from Maryland to Virginia at Harpers Ferry and continued westward in West Virginia until this point, where it crossed back into Maryland to reach Cumberland. The rail line crosses the North Branch and the C&O Canal and merges with the route of the old Western Maryland Railway near Mexico Farms. The rail line also served the Pittsburgh Plate Glass (PPG) factory outside Cumberland, which operated a large glass factory on a 150-acre plant here from 1956 to 1981. Following its closing, the PPG site was found to to contaminated with a variety of hazardous materials, but a remediation plan has had some beneficial results.
