Dartmouth College's Ledyard Canoe Club has supported flatwater and whitewater canoeing and kayaking since 1920. The club was founded in the vision of college alumnus John Ledyard, who left Dartmouth in the 18th century to paddle down the Connecticut River to the Long Island Sound in a dugout canoe. The club has become a key part of the whitewater kayaking community, and provides instruction, rentals, and trips for Dartmouth students of all paddling abilities. The club also provides public access from their dock and a cabin for rent on Gilman Island.
