Sewage Overflows-- In September 2025, lawmakers from Connecticut called for federal action from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding persistent sewage overflows into the river from older combined sewer systems in Massachusetts cities like Holyoke and Springfield. The overflows, which have been occurring for years, have raised concerns about water safety for recreation and aquatic life. In July, Holyoke experienced significant overflows, with more than 7 million gallons of untreated sewage discharged into the Connecticut River. The City of Holyoke recently announced plans to upgrade its wastewater treatment plant to a system using artificial intelligence (AI) to help manage the plant. This annual watershed-wide event encourages volunteers to remove trash from the river and its banks in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
