Photo of Dickerson whitewater course

Until 2020, the Potomac Whitewater Racing Center maintained and operated a world-class canoe and kayak training facility in the outflow canal of the NRG Dickerson Generating Station. Before the shutdown of the Dickerson Generating Station in 2020, the course was the only year-round, warm water artificial training course in the U.S. that could be used year-round. Approximately 40 athletes trained on the site and competed in the National Championships and U.S. Olympic Team Trials. Several atheletes who used the facility have become World Champions, Olympic Medalists, and World Cup Medalists.

The future of the Dickerson course is uncertain. The racing center also maintains year-round whitewater training gates at the Feeder Canal near Lock 6 on the C&O Canal in Bethesda, Md., and has a "learn to kayak" camp for kids.
