The U.S. Geological Survey stream monitoring site on Zekiah Swamp Run near Newtown, Maryland was established in the early 1980s to support hydrologic research and environmental management in Charles County. Since its inception, the site has provided continuous data on streamflow, water quality, and seasonal variations in discharge across a drainage area of nearly 80 square miles. Operated in cooperation with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and the Maryland Geological Survey, the station has played a key role in studies of groundwater-surface water interactions, low-flow characteristics, and swamp preservation. Its long-term dataset has informed regional planning, flood risk assessment, and ecological conservation efforts in the Zekiah Swamp watershed.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
