Lobstermen's Monument

Washington, D.C.

A striking monument, located near the Maine Avenue fish market, is dedecated to the watermen of Maine. The scupture is a replica of a statue created for the 1939 World's Fair in New York City. The current statue was created in the 1970s. It displays a lobsterman putting a peg into the joints of a lobster's claws. Some Maine watermen were disappointed that the statue did not show a Miane fisherman wearing an oilskin overcoat. The statue was created by sculptor Victor Kahill and originally displayed in the Hall of States. It has been at its current location since 1983.
