U.S. 11 Bridge at Williamsport,MD

Potomac River Highway Bridge

Photo of U.S. 11 bridge

U.S. 11 parallels Interstate 81 in Maryland. U.S. Route 11 is a part of the U.S. Highway System that runs from New Orleans, Louisiana, to Rouses Point, New York. In Maryland, the federal highway runs 13 miles from the West Virginia state line at the Potomac River in Williamsport north to the Pennsylvania state line near Maugansville. The bridge over the Potomac River dates to 1909 when it was constructed as a toll bridge; it was rehabilitated in 1980. The original route of U.S 11 took it through the streets of Williamsport and Hagerstown. U.S. 11 is the descendant of a trail blazed from Pennsylvania following the establishment of Evan Watkins's ferry across the Potomac River at the mouth of Conococheague Creek in 1744.
