Cherry Blossom Update--On March 23, the National Park Service declared that the Cherry Blossoms around the Tidal Basin in Washington had reached their peak bloom. With the warm January and February, it looked for a while like the record (March 15) might be broken. But a cooler March slowed things down. Whither Whites Ferry? The future of White's Ferry, the last ferry across the Potomac River between Virginia and Maryland, is still uncertain. The ferry ceased operation in December 2020, with hopes for a quick resolution of a dispute between the ferry operators in Maryland and landowners on the Virginia shoreline. But the dispute has dragged on for more than two years, with a significant impact on the town of Poolesville, Maryland. More information.

Park Proposal for Cumberland--Western Maryland leaders are promoting a new, $50 million Potomac River park in downtown Cumberland, to complement the Canal Place development. The river park would be located behind Canal Place along the Potomac River and involve the removal of an old dam on the Potomac. The attraction is expected to feature docks for canoes and kayaks, a moderate whitewater course, a viewing area and walking trails.Details
