July 4 Events Shut Down the River

The Potomac around the Mall area was closed to river traffic for several days before and during the 4th of July celebrations. Tour boat operators noted that ther popular river cruises had to be cancelled in anticipation of a large fireworks display on the 4th. Large barges were positioned in the river to enhance the display, considererd one of the world's largest fireworks events in history. The restricted areas include the Anacostia River from the Frederick Douglass Bridge to the 11th Street Bridge. On the Potomac River, the restricted zone stretches from the Key Bridge to the 14th Street Bridge.Details

Fish Kill Near Seneca

A large number of fish in sections of the Potomac River were killed by record temperatures, according to the Maryland Department of the Environment. Environment officials explained that biologists recorded temperatures up to 94 degrees in the Potomac River near Seneca, causing the fish to die. The number of fish impacted has not been released. Long-Term Restoration and Oversight of the Interceptor

Following the disastrous collapse of the Potomac Interceptor sewer line in January, regional coalitions are pressing for stronger restoration plans, public reporting, and sustained investment in critical sewer infrastructure. DC Water has identified additional vulnerable segments of the Interceptor, and environmental groups are calling for independent oversight to prevent future failures along the river corridor. Details
