Potomac River At Flood Stage--After a drier than normal spring, the Potomac River Basin was inundated with a springtime wet spell that raised the river levels to flood stage in many places and the highest river levels since 2018. The weather system brought heavy rainfall to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with flash flood emergencies issued in some areas. A subsequent storm brought more rain to the region later in May. In Westernport, Maryland, two schools were evacuated after the levels of Georges Creek and the Potomac River rose to high levels. More storms were expected later in the week. Details

High Water Has Related Impacts--Recent flooding has led to raw sewage flowing into the Potomac River from Allegany County, raising concerns about water quality and public health. County officials warned of raw wastewater frowing into local waterways including Braddock Run and Wills Creek near Cumberland. In Montgomery County, two people and two dogs were rescued from treacherous conditions after going missing on the river. Strong currents and high water levels made the situation particularly hazardous.Details

Potomac River Air Crash Investigation Continues--Following the devastating crash of an American Airlines jet and a U.S. Army helicopter over the Potomac River at National Airport, the investigation continues. The January collision resulted in changes on how helicopters and airliners follow the river near the airport. The crash was the first major U.S. commercial passenger flight crash in nearly 16 years.
