Papscanee Island Nature Preserve is a site of history and cultural significance for the Mohican Nation. For countless generations, the Mohican people prospered on the land, relying on its rich marine resources and productive agricultural fields. The land was used by indigenous people for thousands of years as a village site. In 2021, a donation of the land back to the Mohican Nation reunited the property with the descendants of those who had once inhabited and cherished it.
