Sleepy Creek Lake
West Virginia Recreation Site

This 205-acre lake is formed behind an impoundment on the Sleepy Creek Wildlife Management Area.
The lake was built in 1962 with a maximum depth of 26 feet and an average depth of 9 feet. One concrete and two gravel boat ramps are available. Pit toilets and four primitive camping areas (fees charged) are also on site. Boating with electric motors only is permitted. The impoundment was created as part of West Virginia?s early efforts to expand public fishing and wildlife habitat in the Eastern Panhandle and built by damming a small tributary of Sleepy Creek.
Paddlers appreciate the lake?s no-wake, electric-motor-only rules, which keep the water calm enough for canoes, kayaks, and small jon boats to explore the shoreline without competing with high-speed traffic. A small boat launch, scattered shoreline access points, and miles of nearby hiking trails make it easy to pair time on the water with a walk through oak-hickory forest or a climb to one of the surrounding ridges.
