County is named for the Allegheny Mountains. The name Allegany is derived from the Delaware Algonquian Indian word, "Alligewi," roughly translated as "Endless Mountains." The boundary between Washington County and Allegany County is Sideling Hill Creek. The county seat is Cumberland.
