Stickpile Hill Hiker Biker Campsite

Canal Campsite

blank dot

At canal milepost 148 , the Stickpile Hill Hiker Biker campsite is one of numerous facilities in the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park devoted to hike-in or bike-in camping. The campsite is located at a part of the canal that follows the Green Ridge State Forest, the largest contiguous block of public land in Maryland, with 50 miles of hiking trails and 200 miles of both dirt and gravel roads through the forest.

When the Western Maryland Railroad expanded west from Hagerstown toward Cumberland, a tunnel through Stickpile Hill provided a much shorter alternative to following the river bend. The tunnel still exists, but its entrances can sometimes be a challenge to find.

There is no fee for use of the Hiker-Biker Campsites on the C&O Canal. Campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservations. Stays limited to one night per site, per trip.

All sites have: chemical toilet, water, a picnic table, and grill. Potable water may not be available at each campsite. Water is treated with iodine. Please plan to have water purification tablets with you. Water is turned off from mid-November to mid-April each year.
