River Access Point

Photo of Pennyfield Boat Ramp

A boat launching ramp for small boats is located at the parking area for Pennyfield Lock. Boats may enter Muddy Branch and go through a stone viaduct under the canal for access to the Potomac.

In 2010, Montgomery County replaced the aging boat ramp with a new concrete ramp, placed stones along the river banks, and created a deep pool downstream from the ramp. The project also added a handicapped accessible parking space. The ramp is mostly used by owners of small flat-bottom mototized hunting and fishing boats, as well as canoes and kayaks.
