Ethel Kennedy Bridge

Anacostia River Crossing

blank dot

The Ethel Kennedy Bridge carries Benning Road across the Anacostia River, linking the neighborhoods of Kingman Park and River Terrace with the broader communities east of the river. Completed in 2004 as a modern plate?girder span measuring 548 feet, it replaced a long succession of earlier crossings at the same historic location, where bridges have stood since the late 18th century. The structure includes eight travel lanes and pedestrian paths on both sides, and it sits just south of the elevated Metro bridge that carries the Blue, Orange, and Silver lines across the river. In 2014, the District officially named the bridge for Ethel Kennedy, honoring her decades of environmental and social?justice advocacy, including work to restore the Anacostia and support communities along its banks. Today the bridge serves as both a major transportation link and a symbolic recognition of civic activism in the watershed.
