Mattawoman Creek Near Pomonkey MD

River Monitoring Site

blank dot

The USGS gage on Mattawoman Creek near Pomonkey provides continuous, real?time monitoring of water levels and streamflow in one of Charles County's most ecologically significant tributaries. Located just downstream of the State Highway 227 bridge, the station tracks gage height, discharge, and peak?flow events, offering a long?term record that supports flood forecasting, habitat studies, and watershed management. With a drainage area of about 55 square miles feeding its tidal?freshwater marshes, the gage helps scientists and local planners understand how storms, tides, and seasonal changes shape this sensitive system. Its data is widely used by natural resource managers, paddlers, and conservation groups who rely on accurate conditions to protect the creek's exceptional wetlands and wildlife.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

Current stream conditions are shown in the graph below:
