Bass Fishing Tournaments

Charles County's Smallwood State Park hosts one of the largest fishing tournaments in the United States. Each year, the Bass Angler Sportsman Society (BASS) sponsors tournaments in the Potomac near Smallwood State Park. Top prize in the tournaments, which are held in August, run as high as $100,000.

Fishermen have found the Potomac in this area to produce a bountiful harvest. In 1997, the top winner caught 20 largemouth bass weighing a total of 58 pounds. The BASS "Top 150" features 150 professional bass fishermen and 150 amatuers fishing together. On the fianal day, the top 10 pros fish alone. First place in the pro division pays $100,000. The tour heaquarters is at Sweden Point Marina in Smallwood State park.
