USGS Gage at Patterson Creek

Monitoring Site

blank dot

The USGS river gage on Patterson Creek in Western Maryland has a long history of monitoring streamflow and flood conditions in this Potomac River tributary. Established in the mid-20th century, the gage was installed to provide continuous records of discharge and stage height, supporting flood forecasting and water resource management in the region. Patterson Creek drains a largely rural watershed in Allegany County, and the gage has documented decades of hydrologic variability, including peak flows during hurricanes and major storm events. Over time, the site has transitioned from manual measurements to automated, real-time monitoring, reflecting broader advances in USGS streamgaging technology. The historical record from Patterson Creek is valuable not only for understanding local flood risks but also for contributing to long-term studies of watershed health, land use change, and climate impacts across the Potomac basin.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Current stream conditions are shown in the graph below:
