USGS Gage at Marsh Run

Monitoring Site

The USGS river gage at Marsh Run in Grimes, Maryland has been in continuous operation since October 1963, making it one of the long-standing monitoring stations in Washington County. Established to track streamflow and flooding in this 18.9-square-mile watershed, the gage was originally equipped with a water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage. Over the decades, it has documented countless hydrologic events, including peak flows during major storms and seasonal variations in discharge. Historic records show that the gage has been visited regularly since its installation, with data used for flood forecasting, water resource management, and scientific research. Today, Marsh Run at Grimes continues to serve as a vital source of hydrologic information, bridging more than sixty years of environmental monitoring and offering a valuable historical record of how land use and climate have shaped this tributary of the Potomac River.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Current stream conditions are shown in the graph below:
