USGS Gage at Northwest Branch

Monitoring Site

blank dot

The USGS river gage at the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River in Maryland (site number 01651000) provides continuous monitoring of streamflow and water levels in this important tributary. Situated near Hyattsville, the gage records real-time data on discharge and stage height, helping scientists and local agencies track flooding risks, stormwater impacts, and long-term hydrologic trends in the Anacostia watershed. The Northwest Branch drains a suburban-urban mix of land use, making it especially sensitive to heavy rainfall and flash flooding events. Historic crests at this site have exceeded 16 feet, underscoring the potential for significant flood damage in surrounding communities. The gage?s data supports flood forecasting, water resource management, and ecological studies, offering valuable insights into how development and climate variability affect one of the Anacostia River?s major tributaries.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
