North Branch Correctional Institution
Prison
This maximum security prison is operated by the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. It opened in 2003 as part of the Western Correctional Instituion, becoming fully independednt in 2008. The $175 million facility houses approximately 1500 inmates and has more than 500 employees. It is one of the largest employer in Allegany County. The Western Correctional Institution, built in 1996, is located nearby on U.S. 220 on the North Branch Potomac River.
