The town of Carpendale, Maryland, established a mile-long trail from the town across the North Branch Potomac into West Virginia, including the 1500-foot long Knobley Tunnel, The .8 mile gravel trail followed the route of Western Maryland Railway near the Railway's 9th crossing. It connects directly to the C&O Canal towpath near mile 183 in Cumberland. The 1500-foot tunnel included lights for bicyclists and a wooden bridge across the North Branch. However, the trail was temporarily closed in 2020 after a section of the tunnel collapsed. Plans are uncertain about the future of the trail.
