The U.S. Geological Survey stream monitoring site on Catoctin Creek in Loudoun County, Virginia has been collecting hydrologic data since March 1969. Located near Route 9 and Hillsboro, this site monitors the North Fork of Catoctin Creek, which flows eastward from the Blue Ridge Mountains toward Waterford. The station was established to support regional water resource planning and environmental monitoring in the rapidly developing Loudoun Valley. Over the decades, it has contributed valuable data on streamflow patterns, seasonal variations, and watershed health. The site plays a key role in understanding the hydrologic dynamics of the Middle Potomac-Catoctin subbasin and supports flood risk assessment, land use planning, and ecological conservation efforts throughout the region.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
