Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy
River Monitoring Site

The Chesapeake Bay Interpretive Buoy at the mouth of the Potomac River marks the point where the nation?s most historic river meets the open waters of the Bay. Deployed near Point Lookout, Maryland, this NOAA "smart buoy" has been operating since 2007 and provides real?time readings on weather, waves, and water quality to support navigation, research, and public understanding of the estuary. Positioned along the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail, it also serves as a modern waypoint on a route first charted in 1608, offering today?s boaters and visitors a direct connection to both the river's natural dynamics and its deep cultural history. While this buoy is located far enough south that it has remained in the water over winters, intermittent data gaps do exist due to equipment failures. Data is collected by NOAA and made available for education and navigation. Current conditions are shown below.
