Monocacy River at Jug Bridge

The U.S. Geological Survey stream monitoring site on the Monocacy River near Jug Bridge, Maryland has been in operation since October 1929, making it one of the longest-running hydrologic observation points in the region. Located just downstream from the Interstate 70 bridge and near the confluence with Linganore Creek, the site has played a critical role in tracking streamflow patterns and flood risks for nearly a century. It features a water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage, with occasional flow regulation since 1972 due to the nearby Linganore Reservoir. The station?s extensive historical record supports flood forecasting, infrastructure planning, and environmental research throughout Frederick County and the broader Monocacy River watershed.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
