Catoctin Creek Near Middletown

The U.S. Geological Survey stream monitoring site on Catoctin Creek near Middletown, Maryland has been collecting hydrologic data since August 1947. Originally established to support regional water resource planning, the site has evolved into a key location for tracking streamflow trends and flood risks in Frederick County. Over the decades, it has recorded both extreme high flows, such as the 12,000 cubic feet per second discharge in October 1976, and periods of no flow, notably in late summer 1966. The station features a water-stage recorder and crest-stage gage, and its data have been used in multiple revisions and reports. Today, it continues to provide vital real-time information for environmental monitoring and infrastructure planning in the Catoctin Creek watershed.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
