Shenandoah River at Luray

USGS Streamflow Monitor

blank dot

The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a stream monitoring site on the South Fork of the Shenandoah River near Luray, Virginia, identified as station 01629500. Situated in Page County, this site tracks real-time streamflow and water quality data, contributing to regional hydrologic studies and environmental assessments. It monitors a drainage area of approximately 1,372 square miles and sits at an elevation of about 721 feet. The station plays a vital role in understanding watershed dynamics, including nutrient levels and potential impacts from harmful algal blooms. Its long-term data collection supports flood forecasting, water resource planning, and ecological research throughout the Shenandoah Valley.

Federal and state agencies maintain river level monitors throughout the Potomac River Basin. The U.S.Geological Survey compiles real-time information from river monitors, in cooperation with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

NOAA has an online chart of flow conditions and forecasts, as shown by the chart below: Graph of USGS water data and NOAA predictions.
