Sunset Beach
Bay Access Point

Sunset Beach in Cape May, New Jersey is a beloved coastal spot where natural beauty, history, and tradition converge. Located at the end of Sunset Boulevard in Lower Township, it’s famous for its breathtaking views over the Delaware Bay—especially at dusk, when the sky ignites in brilliant hues during the nightly flag-lowering ceremony held from Memorial Day through September. Visitors comb the pebbled shoreline for Cape May “diamonds,” smooth quartz crystals polished by the surf, and gaze out at the ghostly remains of the SS Atlantus, a World War I-era concrete ship that ran aground in 1926. The beach also features gift shops, a seasonal grille, and a mini golf course, making it a favorite for families and day-trippers. Though swimming is discouraged due to strong currents, the beach’s quiet charm and dramatic sunsets make it one of Cape May's most iconic destinations.
. Sunset Beach offers informal kayak access to the Delaware Bay, but has no designated kayak launch ramp. Experienced paddlers often launch directly from the beach itself--especially during calm conditions and low tide. The shoreline is pebbly and can be steep in places, so launching requires care and proper footwear. There are no rental or outfitter services on-site, but nearby companies like Aqua Trails offer guided kayak tours through Cape Mays marshes and harbor areas.
Because Sunset Beach is exposed to open bay conditions, paddlers should be mindful of tides, wind, and boat traffic. It's best suited for confident kayakers familiar with coastal launches. If you’re looking for a smoother entry point, Cape May Harbor or Spicer Creek Boat Launch may be better options with formal facilities.
