Beach Plum Island

Bay Access Point

Photo of Beach Plum Island

Beach Plum Island Preserve, nestled at the mouth of the Broadkill River where it meets the Delaware Bay, is one of Delaware’s last undeveloped barrier islands. Though often referred to as part of Cape Henlopen State Park, it stands apart--accessible via South Bayshore Drive near Broadkill Beach. The island's narrow shoreline and shifting dunes are home to native beach plum shrubs, migratory birds, and delicate coastal ecosystems. It's a favorite for surf fishing, with drive-on access permitted for vehicles bearing a valid Delaware surf fishing permit. The eastern end is protected as a nature preserve, closed to vehicles and foot traffic to safeguard nesting habitats and fragile vegetation. With its blend of solitude, tidal rhythms, and conservation focus, Beach Plum Island offers a rare glimpse into Delaware's wilder coastal heritage.

Beach Plum Island does not have a formal kayak launch, but paddlers with experience and proper gear can access the Delaware Bay from nearby areas. The island itself is part of Cape Henlopen State Park and is primarily managed for conservation and surf fishing, with drive-on beach access permitted for vehicles with a valid Delaware surf fishing permit. However, the beach is narrow and subject to tidal changes, making it unsuitable for launching kayaks directly from the island.
