Photo of Mispillion River

The Mispillion River winds through southern Delaware, flowing into Delaware Bay near the town of Milford. Historically, it served as a vital waterway for shipbuilding and trade, with over 400 vessels constructed along its banks during the 19th century. At its mouth once stood the Mispillion Lighthouse, first built in 1831 to guide ships safely into the inland port. The original structure was replaced in 1873 with a Gothic-style wooden tower, which remained active until 1929. Though the lighthouse fell into disrepair and was eventually destroyed by lightning, a replica now stands in Lewes, preserving its legacy. Today, the DuPont Nature Center occupies the old lighthouse site, offering educational programs and stunning views of the river’s estuarine habitat.
