FDR Park
Park

FDR Park in South Philadelphia is a historic and expansive urban oasis that blends natural beauty, recreation, and cultural heritage. Originally designed in 1913 by the Olmsted Brothers--sons of the famed landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted--the park was part of the "City Beautiful" movement and was first known as League Island Park. Spanning over 340 acres, it features a mix of landscaped grounds, tidal lakes, and natural wetlands, earning it the local nickname "The Lakes." The park includes athletic fields, picnic areas, a golf course, and a boathouse, making it a hub for both organized sports and casual outdoor enjoyment. It also served as a key site during the 1926 Sesquicentennial Exposition, with remnants of that era still visible today. In recent years, FDR Park has become a focal point for revitalization efforts aimed at balancing ecological restoration with expanded public access and community programming.
