Penn's Landing in Philadelphia is home to two remarkable historic ships that offer visitors a glimpse into America’s naval past. Moored outside the Independence Seaport Museum, the USS Olympia and the USS Becuna are both National Historic Landmarks. The Olympia, launched in 1892, is the oldest floating steel warship in the world and famously served as Admiral Dewey's flagship during the Battle of Manila Bay in the Spanish-American War. Nearby, the Becuna is a World War II-era submarine that completed five wartime patrols in the Pacific and later served during the Cold War. Visitors can explore both vessels through self-guided tours, experiencing firsthand the cramped quarters, engineering marvels, and storied history of these naval icons. Together, they anchor Philadelphia’s maritime heritage and provide a powerful connection to the city’s role in shaping U.S. naval history.
