A young officer from Virginia named James Monroe, who was seriously injured during the First Battle of Trenton, convalesced here. In 1817, he became the fifth president of the United States.

The house is part of the Washington Crossing Historic Park and is only open for guided tours, which are offered every day from 10 AM to 4 PM. The house and grist milll are closed beginning January 2 and reopen in mid-March.
