Mallows Bay Stamp--The "Ghost Fleet" of Mallows Bay on the Potomac Estuary is featured on one of 16 stamps to be issued by the U.S. Postal Service this August. Peter Turcik, a photographer with the Chesapeake Conservancy, took the photo in 2016 as part of a guide to the area and to promote its designation as a National Marine Sanctuary. DetailsCanal Boat Returns to Georgetown--After ten years, a newly-constructed Chesapeake & Ohio Canal boat is now available for tours in Georgetown. The 80-foot boat was formally launched in late April after a fundraising campaign by Georgetown Heritage and local businesses. Rides for up to 65 passengers run Wednesday through Sunday between 10 AM and 4 PM, and the boat will be available for private rentals. Tickets range from $10 to $20. More information.
Riverkeeper Sues over Alexandria Runoff--The Potomac Riverkeeper is suing the City of Alexandria over pollution discharged from a stormwater pipe in the Old Town area. The Rivekeeper alleges that the city's discharge includes coal tar and other toxic chemicals. Efforts to control the discharge have been ineffective, according to the lawsuit.Details
