This was our last tourist attraction visit while in the DC area, and it was spectacular. We found parking fairly easily and then made our way to the estate. We were able to tour most of it, but some of the buildings were under renovation. We did get to see some of the main house and walk through the rooms. For two history buffs, this was pure joy. There were volunteers to answer our questions and guide us across the huge estate. We did do a lot of walking to see just about everything and the gorgeous weather during our visit was a huge bonus. There is a tram to take tourists around if you prefer not to do a lot of walking. We found the area where they think the slave's graves are to be the most interesting and unexpected part of our visit. The tour also includes the burial site of George and Martha Washington. This is definitely an all-day to do right kind of place. The views along the Potomac River are breathtaking. And don't miss the huge shopping area known as the Shops at Mount Vernon

Brought the family here on October 18th, 2025. This place is amazing. The main house was under renovations.
I would recommand that if you are wanting to try any of the food made onsite. Skip everything and head down to the farm. We missed it but about 10 minutes.
The unmarked graves of the slaves that worked on the farm was probably the most sad part of the visit.
Everyone that works here is always in character so keep that in mind if you talk to anyone once you're outside of the entrance.
I would recommand this place if you are into history.

What a beautiful property Mount Vernon is..we visited mid December and the house, which has been having lots of renovations, had just reopened 2 weeks before! It is a beautifully decorated house with vibrant colored rooms accented with gorgeous trim and accents throughout . The property is right on the Potomac with beautiful views. The museum was decorated with 5 or more beautiful trees for Christmas and there's a complimentary photo shoot for visitors to partake in.
We loved the trivia facts we found out, like Aladdin the camel. He represents what G.W always had on the compound around Christmas time, to represent the Nativity.
We were able to hike the whole compound, and walked to G.W and Martha's burial site . There's a beautiful museum with lots of interesting relics from the house and even A harpsichord!A lovely but somewhat hilly walk. We did it with no problems , taking our time. There's a nice restaurant if you have time and make a reservation, but they also have a little cafe sandwich pick up in the gift shop. The gift shoppe is very large and has lots of very nice local quality products.
Nite, there's only outside seating if you grab a cafe sandwich . We were lucky enough to clear a spot as the slight snow was melting. The temp was about 45 -48 ⁰ but mild and doable if you're a bit hardy.
I will definitely go back during the warmer weather .

Such a naturally beautiful farm where our nation's first president is laid to rest. The tour of the mansion is very educational. Walk the plantation at your own pace. The view of the Potomac is breath taking.

We loved our visit here. The mansion is well preserved including the surrounding structures. The mansion has live presenters to tell the history of the mansion. Worth a visit. Has reenactment during the summer. It’s a bit of walk to visit the entire area. We got 20% discount purchasing tickets online. Parking is free. Kids got a good history lesson.
