Serendipity moment we caught these two sporty humans in action while visiting the overlook! Even if water has been lowering year by year is still a magnificent place to visit!

This hike was absolutely worth it! The Billy Goat and Bear Island trails are stunning—beautiful views of the Potomac River, rocky climbs, and peaceful wooded sections. The terrain definitely keeps things interesting, with some fun scrambling sections that make you feel like you’re on a bit of an adventure.

It’s well-marked and maintained, and there were plenty of scenic spots to stop and take it all in. I’d recommend sturdy shoes and bringing water, especially if it’s hot. Parts of the trail can be a little challenging, but totally manageable with a moderate fitness level.

Overall, it was a great mix of views, activity, and nature. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a hike that’s both energizing and rewarding!

That have been quite an adventure, I loved it! I was aiming to go for Section B which is more moderate and less technical but I took a wrong turn (right turn instead of left turn) from Angler's Foot Bridge.

However, this trail is not for beginners. It features multiple rock scrambles, including the famous "Traverse" climb, which requires upper-body strength and good balance. Proper hiking shoes with good grip are essential, especially since the rocks can be extremely slippery after rain. If you’re looking for a good workout, this trail provides an excellent mix of steep climbs and technical terrain. If you’re hiking with kids or prefer a less strenuous option, you might consider Billy Goat Trail B or C.

Pros:
Scenic Beauty – Stunning views of the Potomac River and Mather Gorge.
Challenging Rock Scrambles – Fun and adventurous for experienced hikers.
Good Workout – Steep climbs and uneven terrain provide a full-body challenge.
Wildlife & Nature – You might see herons, turtles, and even bald eagles.

Cons:
Not for Beginners – Requires agility and endurance, especially at the famous "Traverse" climb.
Crowded on Weekends – Popular trail, so expect heavy foot traffic.
No Dogs Allowed – Pets are not permitted on Section A.
Weather Dependent – Slippery rocks make it dangerous after rain.

Best Tips:
Wear good hiking shoes with grip.
Bring water (no refills available on the trail).
Avoid rainy days—the rocks get dangerously slippery.

This is a great hike! Including the walk to the trailhead and the walk back down the tow path, it took us about 2.5 hours. The trail portion of the hike is challenging and ton of fun! There’s a cliff wall to climb, and LOTS of rocks to hike over/across. Of note, pets aren’t allowed and I wouldn’t recommend it for small children.
