Great Way to See DC from the Water!
We had family visiting from out of town recently and decided to take the City Cruises Water Taxi from the Georgetown Waterfront to The District Wharf, and it turned out to be such a fun and scenic way to experience DC.
We boarded the 5:30 PM taxi on a Sunday evening, just in time to catch the sunset over the Potomac River and stunning views of the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, and Jefferson Memorial. The ride took about 30 minutes and was smooth and relaxing the entire way.
💡 Tip: The departure sign at the Georgetown dock is small, so keep an eye out for it. It’s located in front of Fiola Mare restaurant, and there’s a beautiful metal sculpture of a person’s facial profile nearby to help you find the right spot.
The crew was friendly and helpful, assisting us on board and reminding us to arrive early for the 5:30 PM departure. They recommend arriving by 5:20 PM for prompt boarding. There’s a small concession area on board with sodas and snacks for purchase.
We sat outside on the bench for the best monument views. Outdoor seating is limited, but there’s also indoor seating available. The ride from Georgetown to the Wharf was smooth and scenic. Thank you to the captain and crew for a nice experience.
🎟️ We booked our tickets online through the City Cruises website. The cost was about $55 plus tax for two people (one way), which felt a little pricey but worth it for the views and convenience. We took an Uber back from the Wharf to Georgetown, which worked perfectly and gave us time to explore the Wharf.
Next time, I’d love to take the water taxi to Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, or National Harbor, Maryland for another beautiful ride on the water.

I booked a round trip “cruise” from Georgetown to Alexandria and back. We’re just now docking in Alexandria and I’m wondering if I should take an Uber back. The “tour” is simply a recording that might be interesting, but cannot be heard above the deafening sound of the boat itself. I’m baffled by the great reviews, and maybe they are for different experiences with this same company. I paid $38 after taxes for the round trip ticket and I guess I got what I paid for. Sort of…
