Hard hike, amazing reward.

The walk to the Maryland Heights Overlook is about 2 miles each way, and yes — it is a tough uphill hike. But once you reach the top, the view makes it all worth it.

From the overlook, you get a beautiful view of Harpers Ferry, the rivers, the mountains, and the town below. One of the coolest moments is watching a train pass through from above.

Bring water, take your time, and wear comfortable shoes. It’s challenging, but the view is unforgettable. Highly recommended.

The view from the top is incredible! However I read many reviews stating the trails were clearly marked. Me and many other hikers were extremely confused the whole way to the top! Whichever trail you choose just keep going! You'll think you've made it but until you reach the view you haven't arrived. There are definitely some steeper areas, but overall I didn't think it was too hard. There are many places to sit and rest on the way up. To get to the entrance of the trail you have to cross the train bridge to the other side if the town. Keep going down the trail along the water until you see the walking bridge that crosses you over to the entrance. Take water!

It's a great hike filled with stunning views and scenery.
The trail is well marked and easy to follow. It's a wide well worn trail. There are some steep sections.

On a sunny day in late April this place is magical. I could not resist to visit even after just finishing the C&O Canal 100-mile ultra marathon less than 24 hours ago and the Boston marathon a week ago! Taking the free shuttle bus from the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park to the Lower Town Harper's Ferry to start and finish the hike is really convenient. I would definitely like to visit this place again during the fall to see the color changes.
