The Shenandoah Canal runs along the route that the shuttle takes to get to Harpers Ferry if you get to where the shuttle drops you off and go towards Virginius Island and you can walk along and see the canal. We were there on a nice clear cool day so we did not use any bug spray.

Travelling along the main road, the Shenandoah Canal is a wonderful sight when visiting Harpers Ferry. While many may find the algae off-putting, it is a natural and healthy part of ecosystem in maintaining a fresh environment for the local fauna. That said, many species of wildlife are typically found along the canal, such as ducks, geese, heron, turtles, and sometimes deer.

Just be careful here. Make sure you hose yourself down with deet cause this is a breeding ground for skeeters. Other than that a cool place to come across while hiking.

Always quite on weekdays. Love the serene feelings. Bug spray a must. Not near potty.
