We came here for a short hike and a picnic. The park rangers at the visitor center were very informative and friendly to my children. One of the snakes in the visitor center was just finishing his lunch.
The hike to Fossil Beach was easy and the small beach was delightful. We can't wait to come back in the summer.

Wonderful place to camp with trails a-plenty, a beach to enjoy, shark teeth to find, places to fish and paddle about, pull through sites, clean bathrooms, a lovely discovery center with rangers willing to share their knowledge and get kids involved in the Junior Ranger program. The visitors center has a great view and live animals. The parks Hall serves as a great venue for small to mid-size weddings. The park did a great job prepping that area for use on rental days and checked on us several times to make sure we had everything. Once the playground is repaired again after the tree fell on it and the cabin renovations are complete, it will shine even more.

We love this State Park! The camping spots are spacious and clean, beautiful bike paths and trails and the rangers have fun activities for the kids going on and of course Fossil Beach was the best!

I had some extra time today and decided to visit Westmoreland State Park. After a quick visit to the visitor center I walked down to fossil beach via Big Meadow Trail.
Easy trail downhill, easy trail uphill back, with a bench halfway to use as you fancy. Quiet little family beach on the Potomac River. Smooth water.
Some people had colanders. I guess looking for fossils. I squatted at the water line like they were but saw no bones. I did find a few cool palm-sized skipping stones. Sort of triangles, two sides were more beveled then the other. They skipped really well.
I will plan a longer visit to see the other trails. Maybe get lucky and find some fossils.
