I been living in Hagerstown and just now discovered this spot and I been to dam 4 a lot of times. If you get a chance to go. Turn right at the sign and walk that side to see the caves. I didn't go beyond the lock but will check that area out soon.

It’s a beautiful place to visit. The sound of the running water is soothing. The scene is simply stunning. I see a lot of bikers there. I think it’s a good starting place for either biking or hiking. The Potomac River runs quietly along the path. Cross the river is WV. You see nice homes and trailers on the river bank. If you just want a quiet and healthy day trip you should visit this place. After that you should drive to Shepherdstown WV. You will find. Nice restaurants in town and ice cream shop and popcorn place in downtown for years. It’s less than 2 hours drive from DC. Absolutely worth it.

It’s really nice to see the beautiful scenery and variety of activities people enjoy here. Hiking, biking, fishing, water skiing, kayaking, jet skiing, organized bike tour etc. you name it. The well finished trail offers a great biking experience. It is also quite aesthetically pleasing

Very fun trail that stays flat almost the whole way. Most of the trail is a paved path, and a little of it it dirt. Very nice views and scenery to see along the way. The trail is always cleaned and well maintained with hardley any trash or other random things along the way. Depending on the time of year, it can get quite busy but not enough to turn you away. Becarful of side paths along the trail, most of which lead to private property. No matter the time of year, this is a great place to come take a walk or bring the dogs out.

The house is private property near the mill, and the mill is not open or in working order. It is the "gateway" way from the parking lot to the c and o canal trail here, which is now open to dam #4 since mid-2010. it runs along the Potomac River, and from this starting point, you'd go either way a more than a few miles before you're back on the traditional c and o, which is separate from the river.
