I have this original 1861 newspaper page of the Long Bridge. Title is "The advance guard of the grand Army of the United States crossing the Long Bridge over the Potomac at 2am on May 24, 1861."

Amtrak from DC to Southern Pines NC. Sceneries trip over the the water. Not like European trains which are quieter. You can read, listen to music or watch a movie with your headphones, or chill. I saw a couple bringing their wine and picnicking. To each their own. Train was delayed and late. Trio enjoyable.

I'm giving the Long Bridge two stars. Uninspiring, rusty, with pealing paint. It long overdue for replacement which I believe isn't going to occur anytime soon. A second double span is currently in the planning stages to vastly expand the rail capacity into the district.

This bridge currently has two tracks and is used by Amtrak, Virginia Railway Express and CSX trains. Also, construction is underway for a parallel 2 track bridge for Amtrak and Virginia Railway Express which will be completed by 2030. Next to the Amtrak and Virginia Railway bridge will be a pedestrian, bicycle bridge. The bridge crosses over the Potomac River.

The Long Bridge refuses to open for vessel traffic on the Potomac River and only has a clearance of 18.5 feet at high tide.
