What can be said about the Antietam National Battlefield. One of the largest, most well-preserved sites of the War Between the States. 3000 acres, every bit accessible. The location of the battle that is still the bloodiest single day in American history.
The Visitors Center is new and excellent. With a 30-minute introductory video, you leave for a battlefield tour well-prepared.
We paid ($120 for two of us) for a three-hour guided tour. I highly recommend it. Long enough to get thorough information, but not too long so as to leave you exhausted. Our guide, Randy, was amazing. He has been giving Antietam tours for 19 years, and it shows. He rode in our car, and we stopped at appropriate spots along the way. He recited every detail from memory, and, as all good guides do, had period photographs which added to our stops. He answered every question knowledgeably, and was truthful while avoiding any political or derisive commentary about the Confederacy.
Take the three-hour tour. There are other options available, at the excellent US Park Service authored website.

The history of this landmark is both fascinating and disturbing. The visitor center charges $10 a person to view exhibits that have mostly been removed due to a water leak. The Battlefield as well as the self guided tour is well preserved and presented. Remember to bring bug spray and water if you’re planning on walking/hiking the area. I recommend this place for any American History enthusiasts.

A beautiful battlefield park, well preseved with a wonderful visitor center. This is one of the best parks to visit in terms of being untouched by time, many of the areas look as they did during the battle. There are several monuments and markers that help oriente you to what happened where. They is a small store/cafe just outside the park where you could get food to take with you for a nice picnic at any number of places in the park.

Relics of the war of Independence can be witnessed with detailed scrolls and mentions.

The entire drive through is very clean, picturesque and plenty of parking spots. You can park and go for a hike on the trail too.

Antietam Battlefield is a great place to run and bike. There are an abundant number of historical trails or stick to the main road. The trees and views are spectacular. A neat fact, you can see the longest bluebird trail of birdhouses here. There’s a group of bird watchers/volunteers from the Maryland Ornithological Society that keep track of the yearly birds nesting in the boxes, and they’ve been doing it since the 70s! It’s also a great place to see blue jays, cardinals, and I even spotted a Baltimore Oriole once.

The luminaries memorial held here the first Saturday of December each year is very special... You will drive through the battlefield with your lights off and see thousands of candles burning in the fields to symbolize the bloody battle… Very moving and our family and friends have driven across the country to attend this event.
