I spent my visit exploring the boardwalk at Huntley Meadows Park and was genuinely impressed. The boardwalk is well maintained, easy to walk, and offers beautiful views across the wetlands. There are several places to turn back if you want a shorter walk, and the entire route is flat, making it accessible for most visitors.
The wildlife was incredible. During one visit I saw a large turtle, a great blue heron, an egret, and a Canada goose family with three goslings. It's a fantastic place for birdwatching, wildlife photography, or simply enjoying nature.
The highlight for me was the observation tower. The panoramic view across the marsh is breathtaking, and I could have sat there for a long time just taking it all in.
I was also pleasantly surprised that there weren't many bugs and there wasn't the swampy odor you sometimes expect around wetlands. Parking was plentiful, and despite visiting on a nice day, it never felt crowded.
One thing families should know is that not every section of the boardwalk has railings, so young children will need close supervision. Also, no dogs, bikes, or jogging are allowed on the boardwalk, which helps keep the area peaceful and protects the wildlife.
Whether you're a serious birder, a photographer, or just looking for a relaxing walk outdoors, this park is absolutely worth visiting. I'll definitely be back.

This is a beautiful park for a nature walk. There are packed, well-maintained paths through the woods as well as a nice boardwalk through the marsh. We always see turtles, frogs, ducks, geese, heron and many insects when we visit. We've visited in fall, spring and summer and have loved it on all seasons. It's great for a family outing. There are many wildlife photographers and park rangers/volunteers who will point out interesting wildlife. There are a lot of parking spaces but the lot can fill up quickly on nice days.

This park is amazing! I come here all the time for a walk or a run. It’s quiet, there is a lot of fauna, you can get on a trail in the woods, or you can sit on a bench and observe the water reservoir with lots of different birds. I’ve seen just about every animal that lives in VA at this park. It’s very accessible - you can go there in a wheelchair and experience pretty much the whole thing. A long stretch of an asphalt path goes all the way from the parking lot to the reservoir (my watch says it’s just shy of a mile long one way). Keep in mind there are no public restrooms, at least there aren’t any if you come from the Kings Hwy side of the park. I think that’s partly the reason why there aren’t a lot of people there and I would sign a petition to keep it that way if needed.

The time of Close listed on Google is incorrect, it’s open until dusk, not 4 PM.

I’m just visiting the area and this park is blowing me away. So well designed, so thoughtful, completely apart from the rest of the city. Beautiful wide trails. A real gem.

I went birding here over the weekend with a friend. She's been doing it for a while and suggested this place as a great place to see birds. It was awesome they have so many birds. it's really a beautiful park you know you can see it I guess a wetland and you get to walk across bridges and really get up to the terrain while seeing different birds, turtles, and frogs in their natural habitat in a very relaxing atmosphere. Highly recommended for walks with your family photography birding and similar activities. There are some rules so it's not to disturb the animals but they're all clearly displayed so you'll get acclimated when you're there.
