The Lockkeeper’s House is a charming little piece of Washington history tucked right by the National Mall. This modest stone building once served the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal and now stands as a quiet reminder of the city’s early transportation days. It’s small but full of character, and the surrounding setting makes it a peaceful stop amid the busier monuments. Worth a quick visit if you’re nearby—especially if you enjoy lesser-known historic spots.

This is a great place that has been restored. This place is open only on certain days and for a short time. I was here on a Saturday around noon when this place was open and there were rangers inside. They explained about the lock keepers house and what its purpose was back in the day. They also have some exhibits about how the landscape looked a few decades ago versus how it looks now. They also have a bunch of passport stamps that you can collect! This place is free to visit - no tickets are sold.

One of the lesser-known attractions on the Mall, but worth a visit. The interpretation by the Park Rangers is pretty great. Good for anyone interested in the history of canals and the infrastructure of D.C.

This was one of the locckeeper's houses along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. It's been nicely restored vs the other lock locations along this canal. This has been previously closed and as noted is now restored and great to see in DC vs in the more rural areas within 1-2 hours of the city. Nice historical displays and a knowledgeable ranger was on site the day we visited. Glad that we ran across this cancellation location.
