Newtowne Neck State Park is a hidden gem that offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and tranquility. Nestled on a peninsula surrounded by the Potomac River and Breton Bay, the park provides breathtaking waterfront views and a serene atmosphere that makes it an ideal spot for a peaceful day out.

One of the highlights of our visit was the pristine beach. We went swimming in August, and to our surprise, we had the entire beach to ourselves. The water was clear, refreshing, and the solitude made the experience even more special. It felt like our own private oasis.

The park’s trails are well-maintained and offer a variety of options for hiking, walking, and exploring the diverse ecosystems, including woodlands, wetlands, and open fields. The historical significance of the area is also a highlight, with remnants of early colonial settlements adding a fascinating layer of depth to your visit.

For those who enjoy birdwatching, the park is a haven, with a wide variety of species to observe, especially along the water’s edge. The waterfront areas are perfect for a quiet picnic or simply soaking in the stunning views.

One of the standout features of Newtowne Neck State Park is its sense of seclusion. Even on weekends, it doesn’t feel overcrowded, allowing you to truly connect with nature. Whether you’re a history buff, nature lover, or just looking for a peaceful retreat, this park has something to offer.

Highly recommend visiting this lesser-known treasure in Southern Maryland!

Things to note: The kayak launch will be seen first (keep driving) and consider bringing bug spray on hot summer days.

Such a cute beach in St. Mary's County. We went mid day during the week, so it wasn't busy, but everyone says weekends get crazy busy.

Have visited a few times as an Amateur Radio Operator doing something called "Park's On The Air". This is Where you go to a State or Federal park, setup a small portable ham radio station, and make at least 10 contacts with people around the country and the world with a small radio and small antenna. The park rangers have never troubled me or my fellow amateur radio friends, except once when one decided to use a tree for an antenna support which is not allowed according to the Ranger. This particular Ranger was pretty rude about it as well, but haven't encountered anymore like that yet. It's a big spacious park, but they have limited parking. During the weekends in the summer the park fills quickly and the Rangers block the entrance road. They let cars in as cars leave, but that doesn't happen much. People usually stay for several hours at a time.
Lookup "TheTypicalHam" for more on Amateur Radio.
